The BMS Design Department Lead position

In this position, you will head up the company’s design department. This role is pivotal to the company’s success as the department lead will have overall responsibility for ensuring that the designs produced by the Design Managers adhere to company’s high standards. You will be responsible for day-to-day management of the design department, QA of outgoing design documents and ensuring that company designs stay at the forefront of BMS.

The role will be based at HQ in Surrey with occasional travel to project sites in and around London.

Technical Requirements

·         Proven track record in managing BMS Design Departments or design on large scale construction projects.

·         Experience of liaising with the wider construction teams such as main contractors, design teams, trade contractors, subcontractors and senior management.

·         Experience producing engineering documentation such as Points Lists and description of operations.

·         Ability to review engineered solutions to ensure they meet required budget constraints and highlight possible commercial and technical risks.

·         Ability to clearly detail and explain design concepts to design managers where required.

·         Review and QA panel design and build.

·         Has relevant technical accreditations and qualifications.

·         Sound working knowledge of building services mechanical and electrical systems.

·         Sound working knowledge of building management systems (including but not limited to Schneider, Distech, Tridium & Delta).

·         Sound working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Project, Outlook.

·         CSCS card holder.

·         Knowledge of IT Networks and Topologies

·         High level understanding of cloud-based technologies

·         Understanding of smart building concepts such as standard naming conventions

Main responsibilities

·         Ensure all design deliverables are completed in a timely manner and comply to contract documentation

·         Collaborate with design engineers to develop innovative solutions across multiple projects.

·         Attend project handovers, design meetings alongside design managers

·         Conduct regular design reviews with design and project managers across company projects

·         Liaise with manufacturers and suppliers to source technical information.

·         Identify and communicate design variations to the project manager.

·         Oversee and approve designs before client issue or manufacturing.

·         Monitor project design hours to ensure efficient delivery.

·         Work with the project manager and other departments to deliver individual projects.

·         Liaise with design managers and panel engineers on a continual basis to ensure that they are aware of project requirements.

·         Provide technical support to design managers.

·         Provide technical and non-technical support to less experienced engineers within the business.
